The audit tests your document against the duties that attach to that kind of document, in your state and industry, and against the codes of practice for the work it covers. A policy is not marked down for saying nothing about high risk construction work, and a SWMS is not tested against officer due diligence.
A safe work method statement carries its own duties on top of the general ones. The audit checks whether yours identifies the high risk construction work it covers, specifies the hazards and risks arising from that work, describes the control measures, and says how those measures will be implemented, monitored and reviewed. Those four are the content the Regulation asks for, and a SWMS that reads well can still be missing one of them.
It also checks the SWMS against the codes of practice for the work it actually covers, so a statement about trenching is tested against excavation guidance rather than against every code in the jurisdiction. Superseded references, repealed instruments and role titles that no longer exist are picked up as currency findings, which is usually what has gone wrong with a SWMS that has been reissued for years without being re-read.
What it will not do is fill in your risk ratings. The likelihood and consequence of the work as you carry it out is an assessment only your people can make, so those are left blank rather than guessed at.
Procedures, safe operating procedures and safe work procedures are tested against the duties that attach to telling somebody how to do a task: that the hazards are identified, that the controls are described rather than named, that responsibilities are assigned to a role, and that the training, instruction and supervision the work needs is stated.
Inherited procedures are where currency findings tend to cluster. A procedure written against a repealed regulation, or one naming a role or a regulator that has since changed, is still being followed on site long after the reference stopped being right.
WHS management plans, project safety plans, contractor management plans and site specific safety plans are tested against the duties a plan is expected to carry: consultation, cooperation and coordination with the other businesses on site, how duties are shared, incident notification, and the arrangements the plan says will be in place.
This is the document type with the most obligations bearing on it, because a plan is where a business describes its whole system rather than one task.
A policy is tested against the duties it commits the business to: the primary duty of care, officer due diligence, consultation with workers, and the obligations the policy itself says it will meet. Officer due diligence in particular is often the gap, because a policy can describe what workers must do without saying what the officers of the business will do.
Outdated legislative references are common in policies, which tend to be reviewed on a cycle rather than when the law moves.
Risk assessments are tested against the risk management duties that apply to the work: whether hazards have been identified, whether controls follow the hierarchy rather than defaulting to training and signage, whether the controls are described well enough to be implemented, and whether review is provided for.
As with a SWMS, the ratings themselves are left to you. The audit reports on the process the document records and on what it does and does not address, not on whether your judgement of a risk is correct.
A finding that says your document addresses something has to prove it, so every line the report quotes is searched for, word for word, in the document you uploaded. A line that cannot be found fails the whole report rather than being delivered. An audit that invents evidence would be worse than no audit at all.
The report tests your document against the obligations that apply to you. It does not assess your workplace, and it does not fill in risk ratings, because that is an assessment only you can make.
This is a real report, not a mock-up. We ran the audit over a made up SWMS for a made up civil contractor: trenching to 2.4 metres, written against a Regulation that has since been replaced, with controls listed but nothing said about who puts them in place or how anyone checks. The audit was told none of that. Here is what came back.

“This SWMS has been prepared in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 (NSW) and AS 2885.”
The SWMS is written against the 2017 Regulation, which has been replaced by the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW). An inspector reading section 2 will see the document has not been kept up to date.
What to do. In section 2, replace the sentence with: This SWMS has been prepared under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW). Check the standard cited is the right one for stormwater and electrical conduit work, and name it properly if you keep it.
Every finding is set out that way: the line from your own document, what is wrong with it, and what to write instead. Findings are rated so you know what to fix first, and the report ends with an action tracker listing every action with owner, due date, status and closeout columns ready to fill in. Where the document is a Word file, the report also carries a button to have every one of them closed in it.

Your document goes into private storage. The address it is stored at cannot be opened in a browser: downloads come back through this site, which checks the document is yours before it sends it. Each customer’s documents sit in their own workspace, and an audit is only ever handed one workspace to read.
To produce the audit, the text of your document is sent to Anthropic, who make the Claude models, and read against the obligations for your jurisdiction. That is the step that does the reading, and it means your document is processed by a provider outside Orana Skills Centre. If that matters for your procurement, call us on 1800 231 173 before you upload anything and we will talk it through.
Your document is not published and it is not shown to other customers. It is kept, along with the report, so your library keeps working. You can take either out of your library whenever you like, and choose whether to leave the file in our storage or delete it outright, which destroys our copy and cannot be undone.
On a free audit there is no account, so the report is attached to the email we send you. That means it travels as an ordinary email attachment.

This is a desktop review of a document. We read what you send us and test it against the legislation that applies to your state and industry. We do not visit the workplace, we do not watch the work being done, and we do not assess whether the controls in the document are actually in place.
It is not a certification audit and it is not legal advice. Certification against a standard such as ISO 45001 can only be issued by an accredited certification body, and nothing here is a substitute for that. A finding that your document addresses an obligation means the words are there. Whether you comply depends on what happens at your workplace, which is not something a document can tell us.
Every report is a draft. Findings should be confirmed by a competent person familiar with the work before you act on them.

Yes, a PDF can be audited. It cannot be updated afterwards, because the update edits your own Word file and keeps its formatting, and there is no Word file to edit. Send Word as .docx: an older .doc needs opening in Word and saving as .docx first.

There is no single interval set in law. A SWMS has to be reviewed when the control measures are revised, and a document generally has to be reviewed when the work, the hazards or the law behind it change. Many businesses run a twelve month cycle on top of that, which is the review date this system sets by default. An audit tells you whether the document has fallen behind, which is the part a calendar cannot.
Anyone holding a folder of safety documents they are not certain still comply. Councils, contractors, mine operators, schools, care providers. If you have inherited a management system and do not know what is in it, one audit will tell you more than a week of reading.
